Google plans to roll out AI Overviews and AI Mode in France by 23 September 2026. The AI-generated summaries at the top of search results already capture most of the clicks elsewhere in the world, and France will be no exception.

The facts

  • In the United States, 8% of users click on a classic result when an AI summary appears at the top, against 15% in a classic search (Pew Research).
  • Ahrefs measures a 35% drop in clicks to the first position where AI Overviews is already deployed.
  • 450 French publishers will be paid whenever one of their pieces of content is used in an AI result, under neighbouring rights.

How do you prepare your visibility before the French rollout?

The figures measured where AI Overviews is already live point the way: when an AI summary occupies the top of the page, clicks to classic results fall, by half according to Pew Research, by 35% on the first position according to Ahrefs. Ranking first on Google will no longer guarantee the traffic it used to; being cited in the summary becomes the new prize. And the payment agreement with 450 French publishers confirms that these summaries draw on existing content: the content structured to be picked up.

Preparation cannot be improvised in the weeks after the rollout: content must answer the questions asked directly (an “answer first” structure), structured data must be clean, and measurement must be in place: Google Search Console already segments AI Overviews performance where the feature exists. Companies that start before 23 September will begin with content already proven when their competitors are discovering the subject.
