On 1 September 2026, WARC highlighted a study by the research firm Rival Technologies published in late August, which measures Generation Z's trust in 14 types of organisation (WARC). Social media, influencers and AI companies get the three lowest trust scores in it, while advertising budgets keep flowing into those same channels.

The FTC accuses Amazon of rigging its advertising auctions for seven years

On 31 August 2026, the FTC and 22 state attorneys general filed a complaint against Amazon, accusing it of quietly turning its “second-price” advertising auction into a first-price auction through an undisclosed internal reserve price that allegedly inflated the prices paid by advertisers since 2019 (official press release). More than a million advertisers buy this space without being able to check for themselves how their bid turns into an invoice.

Since 31 August, Search Console shows where websites appear in Google's AI, without their clicks

Since 31 August 2026, every Google Search Console account, anywhere in the world, has had access to the generative AI performance report and to the setting that lets a site opt out of it (official announcement). Businesses now get a first figure on their presence in Google's AI answers and must decide what to do with it, without knowing what that presence does to their traffic.

Google forces AI Max on Search campaigns with no opt-out

Since 1 September 2026, Google has been automatically switching every campaign built on campaign-level Broad Match or on Automatically Created Assets to AI Max for Search, with no way to opt out afterwards (PPC Land). The migration runs throughout the month and changes targeting, and sometimes ad copy, on accounts that never knowingly enabled the feature.

In August, we wrote that an advertising platform's agent does not work for the advertiser paying for it. The bidding change Google imposed on budget-constrained campaigns gives a concrete demonstration: the algorithm can now push bids towards the set target even when historical results were doing better, as long as the advertiser has not tightened that target.
